Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
