Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
